How to Pick the Best Glasses for Your Face Shape
Are you in the market for a new pair of glasses? If so, here is a guide to help you identify the shape of your face and the frame styles which will compliment it best. I am also sharing photos of me in my new eyeglasses and examples of on-trend cat eye, rectangle, oval, and round frames.
Four basic face shapes: round, square, oval, and heart
Round: If you have a round-shaped face, your face is widest through the cheek area. This is said to be the shape that gives a woman the most youthful appearance. Rectangular styles help to make this shape appear longer and thinner.
Avoid very small frames if you have a round-shaped face.
Square: If you have a square-shaped face, you have a broad forehead and a strong jawline. The width of your jaw and the width of your forehead are similar. When wearing glasses, your goal is to soften the angular lines of your face. This can be achieved by wearing oval, round, or cat eye styles.
Avoid geometric frames if you have a square-shaped face.
Oval: If you have an oval-shaped face, the length of your face is greater than the width of your cheekbones and your jawline is slightly rounded. An oval-shaped face is considered the optimal shape to have as you can generally wear any style of glasses.
Avoid very large or oversized frames if your face is oval-shaped.
Heart: If you have a heart-shaped face, your forehead is wider in comparison to your chin. This shape is also referred to as an inverted triangle. Oval and round styles compliment heart-shaped faces.
Avoid top-heavy frames if you have a heart-shaped face.
I recently updated my frames and decided to go with a cat eye style. I have a square-shaped face and previously had a more rectangular frame which was not ideal for me. I chose black frames, but I am also a big fan of tortoise shell frames.
Plastic frames with larger lenses are currently popular. Below I have examples of cat eye, rectangle, oval and round frames that are on-trend. My new eye doctor lets customers take up to four frames home for three days to help with decision making. I was so happy with this policy! I took three pair home to try on and show my husband. If you do not have this option, I would recommend taking a friend or family member with you so you can get an opinion from someone who knows you and your personal style. If ordering frames online, be sure to check out return policies and any restocking fees that may apply.
